Great to learn more about you. Cerulean is truly one of the greatest colours ever - both linguistically and aesthetically. I have included the meme in today's post. Thanks for the tag, it was fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm heading to your site just now Selma.
ReplyDeleteThis is really fun.
ReplyDeleteGoodluck on number 8.
Fun to learn so much about you.
ReplyDeleteI do find it rather interesting though that my profile picture on Facebook features me in a winter coat and goggles!
Groovy- that is a strange coincidence, OR just strange. I really wonder what happens in that house of yours with the talking dust bunnies and the mother running around in swimming goggles.
ReplyDeleteYour dream/goal is to win the Caine Prize??? Ah lovey, trust me, you need a new dream or goal, not because it won't happen for you, but because dreams and goals have a better chance of being realised if they are within your control. Here's a new one I suggest: selling 2 000 copies of your detective stories within the next year. You need to talk to Muthoni Garland of Kenya, google "storymoja" and see how she single-handedly captured a segment of the reading market in Kenya, which she keeps well supplied with good but cheap fiction from a range of writers. Also, if you can, make your way to Kenya next year for the Kwani Litfest, you will not regret it, that country is chockful of ideas on how to get people buying and reading books. Sell Botswana your detective stories. They want them, you know, they just don't know they want them. You have to make them want them. So forget the Caine, there's bigger fish to fry!
ReplyDeleteI am looking for story moja right now. I wish in many ways I would have self published these books. Having to deal with publishers makes marketing impossible. in Botswana, unlike everywhere else on the planet- authors are not needed in marketing and authors who want to be needed- are just plain not needed.
ReplyDeleteAs for Kenya- I wish......I'm a full time working writer- that means I'm happy when I have money for food and petrol.
You can get scholarships to these conferences Lauri. All the Afn writers I know who went from outside their countries were sponsred. There is one in Ghana too, which has an open comeptition, short stories, poetry, etc, and the winners get free tickets and accomodation. It is a good way to meet other writers, think about other markets and develop ideas for marketing etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that info P. I will try to keep my eyes open and apply.
ReplyDeleteI've only attended the Cape Town Book Fair which isn't really a writers' thing fully and yet it was so invigorating. I know I would get so much from such conferences.
